PROFILING EDWIN & ALEX FROM ORQ. K-RIBE

A great step forward towards a bigger Salsa scene was the addition of a new band in our region like Orquesta K-Ribe.

We take the time to interview the two main directors of such a great group and we get behind what they are about and what they are aiming for.

Hi guys, can you tell us something about yourselves?

ALEX: My name is Alex, I'm single , I'm catholic, my hobby is music and my love is music... that's why we created this monster called Orquesta K-Ribe, we are devoted to music, we enjoyed what we do, and we will do everything to be around it, personally I think we created our own style, and with the great musicians that are part of the band and the hard working from everybody, we really believe we got it.
EDWIN: Hi, my name is Edwin, I'm married, I am LDS, and I have very strong believes when it comes to morality, and music is my pasion. I always dreamed of making a band with a diversity of rhytms, and I think that's what we made here in Salt Lake, after just arriving a couple of months ago.

How the idea of making another band came up?

ALEX: Edwin and I... well we almost have the same background in terms of music, and we both of us played in another band here in Salt Lake (Orquesta Latino) and we decided to get something different, a style of our own, something where we can make some arrangentments for the music that we are gonna play, what kind of crowd that we are gonna follow, and we want get more out of the city, people deserved to have something different and people from Salt Lake City are ready for another status in music. Besides that we have all this musicians that they are great in percussion, brass section, vocals, harmony, and more. Actually it wasn't to hard to create this band, every one of us is working really hard to make this dream happen.

From 1 to 10 where do you think orquesta k-aribe is?

EDWIN: Honestly from 1 to 10 I think we are 5 or 6, I say this because we are still working on the things that are gonna make us different, and probably in one or two years we are gonna have one of the best bands in the state.
ALEX: Well, there is always going to be room to improve on, we have high expectetions and also we have other types of rhythms that other bands don't play. For example we play Bachata, Cumbia, Ballenato, a lot people like Cumbiarengue, which is the fusion of Cumbia and Merengue. We will play whatever the crowd likes, if you got to play it, you got to play it. I know it's something different, but if the crowd asks for it, then we better do it right. I think litle things like that are gonna take us to the next level. "Wait for us Salt Lake" we are coming strong and you are going to love what your about to experience with our sound.

What are your plans regarding the band?

ALEX: We are working to get out of the state, we are very grateful to Salt Lake City, but we want to be known in different states too, we have plans to play in Florida, California, Nevada... very soon. We think that us playing outside is going to help our state and see Utah from a different point of view. Just like everyone else, we also want to put Salt Lake on the Map and we know that Utahsalsa.com is doing the samething in it's own way, and we appreciate what you are doing as well.
EDWIN: The best answer for that question is the same reason why we created a 14 member-band. Because we want to compete with the bands out of state. If you see the bands outside of Utah, you will see them with 14 or even more members in it, I think that's one of the reasons why they sound so good. A band with 10 or less members are okay, but we are looking for a higher number in our band. The concept to create this big band is to compete against other great bands that are playing outside of Utah.

Talking about money are you guys affordable?

EDWIN: I think we are... It is a big band but we really think we are affordable, specially if you want a good impact in people. A band is supouse to have 4 brass. I never saw a band in Puerto Rico with no less than 4 brass and when playing Salsa, it just sounds right. Another example would be the difference between one vocal against three or four, which I think sounds much better. I think considering the size of the band, I think we are very competitive in our price range.

If you have to choose between rhythms, which one would it be?

ALEX: I am a Salsero, I love everything about it, but lately I discovered a side of me that is also lining Merengue, and I think is good for me. I've also been introduced to Bachata and other rhythms when I came to this country, which I think I am getting to love as well. I am from Venezuela and over there Salsa is played a lot and all the time, but music is music and I love it.
EDWIN: My input on that is... I love Salsa, in Puerto Rico is all about Salsa, you are born listening to it, the kids know La Clave very good, they are always clapping and dancing Salsa. Now, don't think that I am not open to other rhythms, I like other types too, being in a band gives you the opportunity to expand your taste to other types of music and people. But in my heart, I truly love Salsa, but I'll play any kind of music if I have to.

Any Personal goals?

ALEX: I want to record, I want to be known in the United States and the world if possible, I know it is a big goal but that's what I want. I want people in Puerto Rico, Venezuela and everywhere else to listen to my music and be amazed for what I can do. I deserve to dream and I am going for it. Another personal goal will be to settle down, get married and have a few kids... I think I am ready for it.
EDWIN: Musically I have to write a song... but a good song. I really like to create, so one of my goals would be to turn the radio on someday and listen to a song that I wrote. Besides that, I have other goals, too many to mention right now.

What would you like to tell your fans?

ALEX: I love you guys when I see you guys dancing and happy when we play. I really apreciate you enjoying our music, not even a thank you can show my appreciation. Thanks guys for being there for us. All the hard work that we go through is so worth it, and thanks for welcoming Orquesta K-Ribe... thanks again and we'll see you on the dancing floor.

Have you checked our website?

ALEX: Are you kidding? I love everything about Utahsalsa.com. Everything is great, the discussion board, the gallery, the profiles, the articles, you guys are doing a great job, thanks so much for that venue, it is a great resource to see what is happening in Utah in regards to the Salsa scene. It was needed.
EDWIN: Utahsalsa.com is the most important website in the state, even if there is others out there. No questions asked! I am a follower and from the very beggining I always thought that ONE DAY I will be in one of the profiles, so thank you very much for this great opportunity, and see you around guys, and hope you enjoy all of our music.
